About the Author

Thomas W. Wild is a professor in the Aviation Technology Department at Purdue University. He holds or has held several FAA certifications, including Aviation Maintenance Technician, Designated Mechanic Examiner, Flight Engineer, Inspection Authorization, and Sport Pilot. Professor Wild has earned numerous awards for his contributions to education during his over 32 years at Purdue. He has taught many courses dealing with reciprocating and gas-turbine engines, propellers, propeller control systems, and large aircraft systems. Professor Wild also serves as the managing editor of the Aviation Technician Education Council Journal. He has written and published many books and articles on several aviation-related subjects and served on boards of directors of aviation professional organizations.

Michael J. Kroes is an aviation practitioner and educator with more than 35 years of experience in the field. He holds or has held several FAA certifications, including Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, Inspection Authorization, Designated Mechanic Examiner, Designated Engineering Representative, and Commercial Pilot. Mr. Kroes has worked for some of the top aviation companies, including Raytheon and Allied Signal, and spent 25 years as a professor and department head at Purdue University. Recognized as a leading expert on FAA technician certification, he authored a comprehensive study funded by the FAA. This study was used to develop new FAA technician certification content and guidelines.

Great read for a pilot who wants to know more.

I'm writing this review not from the perspective of an Airframe and Powerplant student, but rather from the perspective of a pilot. I found this book to be very informative and well worth reading to expand a pilots knowledge of engine operating techniques. While it's probably a bit beyond what is required, I can't stress enough to students and fellow pilots that the more they know about the heart of their airplane. The knowledge presented in this book is applicable to nearly all aircraft engines in operation, in fact I can't think of one that isn't really covered except a scram jet.

About the Author
Paul Westwood was born in 1953 and is one of the world's most famous bass players as well as being one of London's elite session musicians. His album credits include such artists as Elton John, Vangelis, John Miles, Stephen Bishop, Andy Williams, José Carreras, Hot Chocolate, Madonna, Jennifer Rush and The Royal Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras. He has toured with Charles Aznavour, John Dankenworth and Cleo Laine, and Cliff Richard and has worked with many jazz musicians including Steve Gadd, Wayne Shorter, Joe Beck and Jon Hiseman. Paul teaches at the Royal Academy of Music, London; King's College, London; and others.

great for beginner/intermediate player

I'm an amateur, self-taught player. Not an absolute beginner, but not very skilled either.

This book was perfect for me - it covers techniques in a way I could understand easily. And it covers lots of different styles of music - so it's helpful for musicians who only know one kind (e.g., if you are a metal head who wants to broaden your playing).

Also, the author does not try to sound cool or condescending. He just covers what you need to know in a way that shows he loves music.

Better than the other introductory books I've seen. I'm not a music teacher, but it seems to me this would be a great accompaniment to lessons after someone has been playing for a few weeks.

I read music only a little, and on a plus side, I do I think listening to the CDs and following the written music is helpful, and I like how the author goes into all kinds of music from all over the world... but the CDs just have short snippets of bass parts and while I guess you could keep clicking the back button on the CD player to repeat the parts over and over... I think the CDs would have been more helpful if the snippets were longer, and/ or if there were versions of music without the bass part so the bass student could play along.
The book and CD just weren't what I expected from reading the Amazon review.
It seems you could learn as much by listening to and playing along with the local college radio / world music/ various CDs you already have/ being in a band/learning covers... gee, I should follow my own advice here!
I will go over it again and update if my opinion changes.

i have just started reading this book and i'm already learning something. the quality of the recordings on the CD's is top notch and the font size is great(i only wish the book was spiral-bound). thank you Mr. Westwood for an invaluable source of inspiration. :)

He died November 1700, and the Court Record at New London shows settlement of the estate Dec. 17, 1700.

He appears to have identified himself closely with the interests of the family until some time after their removal to New Haven. His name does not appear 011 Conn. Records after 1647. It was probably about that time that he went to Long Island, as he was granted a lot in Easthampton, but abandoned it before 1651. From that date to 1658 he resided in Southampton, and probably married his wife, Avis, there, removing about 1658 to Huntington, farther West on the Island, where he is recorded in 167 2, and his will probated there in 1673, leaves all of his property after the death of his wife to Samuel Lum. Son of John Lum, of Southampton. See App. No. 4.

This book is simply a little tract on voodoo beliefs and common terms. No real applicable knowledge of ritual or religion is handed to the reader, but if you have heard a voodoo term and have no idea what it is, this would be a handy book to have. There are lists of the supposed power of certain stones, animal remains, and sundry dubious substances. While it does serve as a light-read and cursory probe into the subject, it is by no means the "Voodoo Handbook of Cult Secrets" the title would have you believe.

It features methodologies for analyzing transistor and op amp circuits, over 100 SPICE examples, and numerous chapter problems. In many cases, new designers of electronic circuits blindly search for ways to improve the design itself using a brute-force, hit-and-miss approach. The intention of this book is to avoid this pitfall by teaching readers what not to do with SPICE. This is accomplished by keying each example in this text to those presented in Sedra and Smith's Microelectronic Circuits 3/E, where a complete hand analysis is provided. A must-read for everyone!

This is one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reading. Not only from a storyline point of view, but also from a literary side - the writing is elegant, eloquent and simply a pleasure to feast your eyes and mind on. The descriptive text immediately conjures up the most vivid pictures (I hope this book is never made into a movie as it would destroy the beauty that a well-written book achieves). I am amazed at the way Kristin Hannah is able to jump from one character to the next, seamlessly, and actually get into that character's head so perfectly. It's like she IS those people! I was fascinated by the fact that she had described the Siege of Leningrad so well - I have been to St Petersburg and visited the Siege museum - it's horrific, fascinating and thought-provoking all in one. I have also been to several German and Polish concentration camps and not been as moved (still incredibly moving, I don't want to minimise the effect the latter have as well but differently so). It is hard to imagine what it must have been like for the Russian women in Leningrad under the Reign of Terror that winter; the psychological strain of Stalin's regime, the physical strain of the cold, the war and the famine, and the emotional strain of seeing your loved ones killed or die from starvation, illness and the cold. All these are so well portrayed by the author. In addition, I thought that the way she wove the two stories together through a fairy tale was exquisite - it kept me reading until the end. And the end...so satisfying in every way. This is a book that should be on everyone's MUST READ list!

It could have been better

I stayed with this book, even though it was frustrating, hoping it would get better. It did, but it would have been much better if it only would have contained the story in Russia. The first half was slow and the main characters very unlikable. The character flaws were overblown and the men too good to be true.
The Russian story is much more believe able and told in a way that made the reader feel the cold and hunger. I thought the end would be rewarding because of the style change but after Anya finishes her story the author goes back to the same trite style. Everything wraps up neatly, characters are brought together, and after 40 years of coldness and dysfunction everyone loves each other. It starts as a fairy tale and ends a fairy tale.

hard to put down

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah is mostly about the difficult time that the Russian people had with the German siege during the Second World War and about Stalin's effect on the population of Leningrad [St. Petersburg now]. It has heart wrenching situations which are sad but it is based on historical research and gives an insight on how very difficult it was for the people living there at the time. It is written for the most part as a fairy tale which is very Russian in concept, as is storytelling. It is presented from a female perspective mostly but I think that the location and life situations would be of interest to everyone. I wasn't sure at first if I would like it but soon found it hard to put down.

About the Author
Paul Tymann is Professor and Chair of the Computer Science Department at Rochester Institute of Technology. His research interests include bioinformatics, operating systems, networking, parallel computing, and object-oriented programming and design.

G. Michael Schneider is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York. His interests include parallel processing, computer networks, and computer science education. He has written textbooks on software development, data structures, computer organization, and a breadth-first overview of computer science. Schneider was a member of the committee that authored the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum 2001. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach computer science curriculum development in Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal and Mongolia.

Modern Software Development Usinjg Java by Tymann & Schneider

This is a down-to-earth and classic textbook on software development via Java as the programming language. Some of us may already had Java programming experience in undergraduate classes therefore this book can serve as the Java programming review. On the other hand we can use this book in conjunction with other already excellent textbooks like "Introduction to Programming in Java" by Robert Sedgewich & Kevin Wayne to begin learning Java in undergraduate classes or to brush up our software development and programming experience. The textbook contains lots of useful illustrations and explanations which do help out a lot while we are exploring the Java programming language and apply it in our software development, and therefore I can go ahead and give this textbook or reference book (depending on what we call it) a five star rating. Thank you.

Book for CS 2110 at UVa

My prof at UVa has us reading an online version of this book which is apparently available. I don't like reading from a computer any longer than I have to (irony) so I ordered it. It's cheaper than most textbooks and is definitely helping with the course. Although, pretty much anything in it can be found with a google search. It goes over more of the process of making code than coding itself. If you go to UVa and are a good student and are reading this, you probably don't need this book. If you sleep in class like I do and don't want to have to try to interpret slideshows, you need this book.

About the Author
CAROLE BLOOM, CCP, studied pastry and confectionery arts in Europe and has worked in world-class hotels and restaurants in Italy, Switzerland, and California. She is the award-winning author of seven cookbooks; her feature articles have appeared in magazines such as Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, Gourmet, and Chocolatier; and she has appeared on The Today Show, CNN, and ABC World News This Morning among others. Carole has taught her art for more than twenty-five years at cooking schools throughout the United States and has also worked as a consultant for both new and established culinary enterprises. Carole lives in Carlsbad, California, with her husband and their two cats.

Fantastic introduction to making truffles

Pros: Fabulous recipes - which are easy to half when you don't need six dozen truffles. Clear, easy to follow directions. Fantastic photography. This book gives the home cook the "I can do this" feel in a clear and comfortable way. All of the truffle cream recipes I've tried have been fantastic. Good cursory overview of different chocolate types. Plus, Marzipan!

Cons: A little light on information about the different types of chocolate, and the variances in working with them. The boiled sugar recipes don't mention the absolute sheer danger of doing some of them. For instance, those are not recipes where children should be allowed to help.

Other reviewers have said that her tempering information was insufficient, but I've been able to successfully manage my batches using her techniques. That said, I'm doing very small batches, usually half of a recipe, which may have something to do with how easy it is for me to keep the chocolate in temper while I'm working with it.

I've not made any of the cluster or caramel recipes, since I've got braces on, and braces and sticky candies are never a good mix. However, once they come off, some of those recipes are on my "must have NOW" list.

All in all, I think this book is a must have for the amateur confectioner.
