The Age of Desire: A Novel, by Jennie Fields

For fans of The Paris Wife, a sparkling glimpse into the life of Edith Wharton and the scandalous love affair that threatened her closest friendship

They say that behind every great man is a great woman. Behind Edith Wharton, there was Anna Bahlmann—her governess turned literary secretary and confidante. At the age of forty-five, despite her growing fame, Edith remains unfulfilled in a lonely, sexless marriage. Against all the rules of Gilded Age society, she falls in love with Morton Fullerton, a dashing young journalist. But their scandalous affair threatens everything in Edith’s life—especially her abiding ties to Anna.

At a moment of regained popularity for Wharton, Jennie Fields brilliantly interweaves Wharton’s real letters and diary entries with her fascinating, untold love story. Told through the points of view of both Edith and Anna, The Age of Desire transports readers to the golden days of Wharton’s turn-of-the century world and—like the recent bestseller The Chaperone—effortlessly re-creates the life of an unforgettable woman.

Review
"One doesn't have to be an Edith Wharton fan to luxuriate in the Wharton-esque plotting and prose Fields so elegantly conjures."--Kirkus

“A fascinating insight into the life of my favorite novelist. Fields brings a secret side of Wharton to life, and shows us a woman whose elegant façade concealed a turbulent sensuality.”

—Daisy Goodwin, author of The American Heiress

“With astonishing tenderness and immediacy, The Age of Desire portrays the interwoven lives of Edith Wharton and Anna Bahlmann, her governess, secretary, and close friend.  By focusing on these two women from vastly different backgrounds, Jennie Fields miraculously illuminates an entire era. . . . I gained insight into both Wharton’s monumental work and her personal struggles—and I was filled with regret that I’d finished reading so soon.”

—Lauren Belfer, author of City of Light and A Fierce Radiance

“[Fields’] portrayal of Edith Wharton in love is imaginative and bold and offers a touching view of Wharton. . . . Fields immerses us in Wharton’s household, her social milieu, and her most private self.”

—Irene Goldman-Price, editor of My Dear Governess: The Letters of Edith Wharton to Anna Bahlmann

“In the vein of Loving Frank or The Paris Wife, Jennie Fields has created a page-turning period piece. Fields portrays a woman whose life was hardly innocence and mirth, but passionate, complex, and more mysterious than one might ever imagine.”

—Mary Morris, author of Nothing to Declare and Revenge

“Somewhere between the repressiveness of Edith Wharton’s early-20th-century Age of Innocence and our own libertine Shades of Grey era lies the absorbingly sensuous world of Jennie Fields’s The Age of Desire . . . along with the overheated romance and the middle-age passion it so accurately describes, The Age of Desire also offers something simpler and quieter: a tribute to the enduring power of female friendship.”
—Boston Globe

“Fields supplements the story with fascinating excerpts from Wharton’s actual letters and includes appearances by other authors of the period . . . to re-create the exciting literary landscape of Paris and New York in the first decade of the 20th century. . . . the novel should . . . appeal to those who enjoyed Paula McLain’s The Paris Wife.”

—Library Journal

“Delicate and imaginative . . . Fields’s love and respect for all her characters and her care in telling their stories shines through."
—Publishers Weekly

Inspired by Wharton’s letters, The Age of Desire is by turns sensuous . . . and sweetly melancholy.  It’s also a moving examination of a friendship between two women.
—Bookpage

“Fields bases her perceptive novel on Wharton’s own diaries and letters. . . . [THE AGE OF DESIRE] sheds welcome light on the little-known private life of a famous woman and her closest relationships in early-twentieth-century Europe and America.”

—Booklist

“One doesn’t have to be an Edith Wharton fan to luxuriate in the Wharton-esque plotting and prose Fields so elegantly conjures.”

—Kirkus

Remarkably evocative, sensually luxurious, emotionally complex
By MKSquared
Everyone in 1907 Paris - even the servants - seems to know that Edith Wharton is a famous American author. Graced by the luxuries of her upper-class status, her writing life is rich with travel abroad, friendships with other writers such as Henry James, and the steady support of her childhood governess turned secretary, Anna Bahlman. But in her personal life, Edith is restless in a way that travel and books and smoking and knitting won't quell. In her mid-forties and married "for all the wrong reasons" to the kindly but morose Teddy, she increasingly senses that something is missing from her life. At a salon in Paris, she catches the gaze of that something in the blue, brazen eyes of Morton Fullerton, an American journalist for the Times of London. And now Edith knows: "She wants something, but is she willing to take the risk to find it?"

Anna Bahlman is practically famous by association to Edith, she tells herself. She takes a quiet pleasure in that fact, knowing that when she types Edith's words, when she suggests a little change or comments on a developing plot, she is becoming part of literary history. She is devoted to Edith, but it pains her to see the distance between Edith and Teddy. Any woman should be happy to call Teddy her husband. Anna once told Teddy that herself. Anna and Teddy have had a special bond since that long-ago conversation, but now both Whartons are becoming more difficult since Morton Fullerton entered the picture. Anna would never have imagined it after all these years, but might she have to start over - at sixty?

The Age of Desire, the story of a love affair and sexual awakening informed by the letters of Edith Wharton, is also the story of a friendship defined by the societal roles and conventions of the early 20th century. The novel's self-assured style is built on meticulous research, skillful characterization, period-perfect pacing, and phrasing and metaphors to make even a poet envious - for example, every word that Henry James, who once stammered, now speaks "bears the weight of a dictionary falling off a shelf." This novel is remarkable for both its eloquent evocation of an era and for its erotic scenes. But its real risk - and triumph - is in its consummate consideration of the emotional complexities of an affair and its aftermath between both lovers and friends. Of this, Edith would be proud.

A Beautifully Written Look Into the Life of Edith Wharton
By Stephanie Ward
'The Age of Desire' is a work of literary fiction that chronicles the inner life of American author Edith Wharton, her close friendship with a woman named Anna, and a scandalous love affair that threatens to destroy their bond. Being a current graduate student working on my degree in Literature, I jumped at the chance to read a book that detailed more of the private life of Wharton - one of America's greatest female writers.

Fields did a impeccable job with her novel. Her writing style flowed effortlessly and I was transported back in time alongside Edith from the very first page. The descriptions of the time and the various settings of the novel were done in such a way that I could simply close my eyes and I could vividly imagine the scene unfolding around me.

The characters in the book were very realistic and believable. They all had unique personalities and flaws that made them easy to identify with - I felt as if I knew them all personally, like I was taking part in the narrative myself. The author wrote the character of Wharton with such earnestness that even her mistakes and character flaws make the reader love her and sympathize with her. We feel her every emotion with intensity and vigor. All the characters are written with this amount of depth, so the heroine doesn't feel over-developed and the other characters are just as rounded, which I feel make the story all the more enchanting.

The novel swept me away from the first page and didn't release it's hold until the last word. There aren't many times when a piece of literature makes a lasting impression on a reader, but this is one that I will be thinking and speaking about for a long time to come. Fields did a wonderful job bringing not only the past to life, but making an iconic American figure come alive before our very eyes. It is an enthralling look into history and a beautifully written piece of literary fiction. I highly recommend this novel to lovers of literary and historical fiction.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The scandalous life of Edith Wharton
By Great Historicals
The Age of Desire is a biographical fiction novel about Pulitzer Prize winning author, Edith Wharton. The novel delves in the tumultuous and co-dependent relationship between Edith and her life-long best friend and secretary, Anna Bahlmann.

At the start of the novel, Edith is married to Edward (Teddy) Robbins Wharton, a man 12 years her senior, and who suffered from acute depression that steadily became more debilitating as their marriage progressed. Their travels ceased and Edith become more and more disenchanted. When she meets and falls hopelessly in love with Morton Fullerton, a notoriously promiscuous journalist who had affairs with both men and women, an affair of the heart begins. Numerous letters are written between them throughout their affair. While Edith is consumed with Morton, almost to the point of abandoning her ailing husband, Anna disapproves and helps care for poor Teddy who loves his wife. Through time, Morton and Edith's relationship deteriorates. The ever-private Edith asks him to burn the letters between them, but he secretly refuses and publishes them instead.

The Age of Desire opens when Edith is 45 years of age and portrays the famous author with all her faults. It reveals her secrets, her scandalous love affair with Morton, and the tumult of her life despite her success. The illusive relationship with Morton was intriguing, tempestuous, and hopeless, lending a touch of sadness throughout the novel because of his aloof attitude towards her. Anna acts as Edith's conscience. She disapproves of the love affair with Morton and the neglect of Edith's husband Teddy. Despite the animosity between the two women, they need each other, their life-long friendship linking them.

I enjoy books with an edge, and this book certainly did not disappoint. Realistic, believable, and cut with minor tragedies and unwise decisions, it is a poignant portrayal of Edith's life, loves, and enduring relationships. Fascinating!

The Chinese Army 1937-49: World War II and Civil War (Men-at-Arms), by Philip Jowett

Although the Chinese contribution to Allied victory in World War II (1939-1945) is often ignored, China fought the Japanese Empire for far longer than any other belligerent nation. By the time that the Sino-Japanese War became absorbed into the wider conflict at the end of 1941, Chinese armies had already suffered huge casualties and half the country had been lost. By fighting on with Allied support, China tied down a million Japanese troops. After Japan's defeat in 1945, China was immediately plunged back into civil war between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists and Mao Tse-tung's Communists; and the latter's victory in 1949 changed the world for the rest of the 20th century and beyond.

If you thought it was rough in the Japanese army...
By Alan D. Cranford
I was undecided about which soldier had a rougher life--the Japanese, Soviet, or Chinese soldier. After reading Philip Jowett's "The Chinese Army," I'll vote for the Chinese soldier. One in four soldiers issued a blanket? The virtual lack of a logistics pipeline severely hindered the Chinese Army's effectiveness. What little trickled down to the soldier's unit was often stolen and sold by his officers. No wonder Mao won! China was in a state of civil war since the mid 1920's. Japan needed resources and saw a failed nation as ripe for the picking. After Japan exhausted itself in China, Japan declared war on the rest of the world and was utterly crushed--Chinese soldiers played an important role in that defeat. Afterwards, China resumed its civil war, with the Communists routing the Nationalists. That civil war continues today with the conflict over Taiwan.

"The Chinese Army" covers the Nationalist Chinese Army--and I am abusing the term "army." Most of the Nationalist army was a half-trained peasant rabble that would have felt at home in the 100 Years War. It astounds me that the Chinese managed to survive close to three decades of civil war--with nearly a third of that in a formal declared war against Japan. I'll have to look up the other Chinese army, Mao's.

Details on uniforms and equipment included a series of color plates that are worth the price of the book. The details on unit organization are sketchy--but then, Chinese Army organization was flexible to the extreme. This book is 48 pages long, a bit slimmer than other Osprey products--but then, the Chinese fought a "come as you are" war. Virtually all weapons were either imports or copies of foreign weapons. Uniforms ranged from ordinary peasent garb (and a sack for ammunition--the few cartridges available) to German-based uniforms for Chaing's personal divisions.

I have to respect these tough soldiers. The only thing harder than being a Chinese soldier was being a Chinese peasant.

Great info
By Robert T. Shultz
As far as I know, this is THE book on The Chinese Army of the thirties and forties. The illustrations and photos are the best I've ever seen and show outstanding detail. This book, even though it is short, shows the fantastic diversity of the Chinese Armies of this period, not just in uniforms, but in weapons and other gear. How this ramshackle collection managed to fight major wars against the Japanese and each other is almost beyond comprehension.

A mixed review of this book
By N. Wang
As a Chinese American interested in the 2nd world war history, this is the ONLY book in English on this subject I know of (of course there is a sibling book covering the time period starting 20 years earlier).

The book does cover a lot of information and the readers need to go through evey page and every picture including the captions of the drawings. The author tried to cover so many issues in such a small booklet: army organization, uniform, persoal equipment, and weaponry from light firearm to artillery and armored vehicle. The vast amount of material can be better organized for easier reading. I'll give it a 5 for the fact that there is much information in such a thin book and the only one on this subject in English.

However, as I also accessed information in Chinese, I'm somewhat disappointed by the mistakes in the book and the somewhat poor way of organization of the material. Majority of the information is accurate, but some mistakes are made, such as some of the weaponry used - not a surprise as Chinese Army had to use what they could lay hands on and even article in American Rifleman on the rifles used by Chinese army in the WWII also has several mistakes! It is a total chaos in fact. For the shortage of some important information, I feel it is a 3.

Therefore a rating of 4 is given. But for readers of English only and interested in this subject, it is still highly recommended as a starting material.

'although its style and presentation are simple, the range of concepts is very great ... includes a range of stimulating and valuable thoughts about delegation' Personnel Management 'This book is required reading for CEOs or anyone responsible for designing and leading an organization. David Stroll, IT Marketing Manager - Services Industries in Europe, Digital Equipment Corporation 'It is one of the most creative, interesting, mind boggling, comprehensive works on organization I have ever read.' Dr Jerry Harvey, Professor of Organization and industrial Psychology - The George Washington University 'Every page overflows with principles to guide the reader's thinking and practical suggestions for implementation.' Trident (Merseyside Chamber of Commerce magazine) 'A remarkable book that should be read by anyone seriously interested in understanding what makes organizations work.' Long Range Planning

From the Back Cover
"Those rampaging against hierarchies today rarely stop to consider that hierarchy as a form of social organization occurs throughout nature. Instead of throwing rocks at hierarchies, it behooves us to try to understand why hierarchy might actually be important and the principles that might guide leaders in distinguishing functional from dysfunctional hierarchy.

"No one has done better thinking on this subject than Elliott Jaques. His Requisite Organization should be required reading for all managers genuinely interested in what-rather than simple tradition, established biases, and pure power politics-might truly JUSTIFY hierarchies capable of serving human and organizational goals."

Peter M. Senge

Center for Organizational Learning

MIT

"A critical application of Dr. Jaques' theories enables today's CEOs to organize their corporations correctly to utilize each employee's God given talents, and to promote and develop employees to their maximum potential unencumbered by bureaucracy, personalities and seniority issues. Dr. Jaques' system, in its eighth year of evolution at Commonwealth Aluminum, has allowed our company to run a system based upon a meritocracy where good performance leads to more opportunity and poor performance leads to removal from role. The employees perceive this as a fair system and the company has achieved significantly improved performance."

Mark Kaminski

President and CEO

Commonwealth Aluminum

"Using Requisite Organization principles in our management system has brought about a clarity of expectations that has been liberating to individuals and immeasurably beneficial to the company."

Dr. W. J. Privott

President and CEO

Novus International, Inc.

"This system is not 'flavour of the month'! It is a comprehensive, integrated, disciplined and rigorous system for all managers, which, when followed, makes such good sense. For any manager faced with the competing demands of running an organization, especially in times of uncertainty and change, the up-front investment of time and effort pays off-it simply makes life easier!"

Karen Robinson

General Manager

Ontario Hydro, Hydroelectric

"The 'magic' in Elliott Jaques' concepts is simply that they work in the field ... I have employed them daily in my work for over 6 years at both the corporate headquarters level of a major global company and, more recently, in its rapidly developing Asia operating region. Whether in 'Peoria' or the People's Republic of China, I wouldn't leave home without Elliott Jaques!"

About the Author
Jaques is Visiting Research Professor in Management Science at George Washington University. He has been engaged in practical field work over the past 50 years in the development and real life testing of a comprehensive theory-based system of organizational structure and managerial processes, including fundamental developments in our understanding of the meaning of work. This system calls for sweeping changes in approach to organizational development work and in the evaluation and development of individuals engaged in work.

This development work has been carried out in projects in industry and commerce, in government, in social, educational and health services, in the Church of England and the U.S. Army. In this latter connection Elliott Jaques was awarded the Joint Staff Certificate of Appreciation by General Colin Powell on behalf of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces for "outstanding contributions in the field of military leadership theory and instruction to all of the service departments of the United States."

Throughout his career, Jaques has continuously combined work with organizations and with individuals against the background of a B.A. Honors Science degree from the University of Toronto, an M.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School, a Ph.D. in Social Relations from Harvard, and qualification as a psychoanalyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatry. Author of 18 books, including Requisite Organization, 1996, Human Capability, 1994 (with K. Cason), and Executive Leadership, 1991 (with S. Clement).

Jaques served as a Major in the Canadian Army during WWII as liaison to the British Army War Officer Selection Board (WOSB). He remained in England after the war. He was a founding member of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations but quickly found that the group dynamics approach did not accurately reflect the reality of managerial accountabilities.1 In 1964, he was invited, as Head of School, to develop the School of Social Sciences at Brunel University in London, and its Research Institute of Organizational Studies.

During his career, Jaques has been responsible for a series of major discoveries in the social sciences, contributing in a significant way to our understanding of human nature and social institutions. The most well known is his formulation of the mid-life crisis, but others with very significant implications include: -

a method for objectively measuring the complexity of work roles, that in turn made possible the discovery of the unexpected existence of universal norms of fair pay for work, which upturns our current assumptions about human greed in relation to pay; -

an objective understanding of the nature of human potential capability, and of its maturation throughout life from infancy through old age, that will change the basis of developmental psychology, and our approach to education; -

the detailed specifications of a range of different organizational systems for industry and commerce, public service, churches, schools and universities, hospitals, and the military, that are requisite in the sense that they provide both for efficient work and for socially healthy settings for human relationships and individual growth.

These developments and many others will make a substantial contribution to the betterment of society and its values. (See "On Leaving the Tavistock Institute". Human Relations, Vol. #51, No. 3, 1998, pp. 251-257).

Fascinating theory, but I do not know how valid it is
By Jackal
I really wanted to like this book because at face value Jaques's theory seems valid. After having read it, I am not enthusiastic at all. The book is extremely managerial. There is no information about the evidence behind the author's requisite organisation theory. In a self-published, obscure book such evidence is necessary. Instead the book is quite repetitive down to the silly idea of having an illustration on every other page.

If any other of Jacques's books provide more empirical support for the theory, please send me a recommendation in the comments section. Much appreciated.

I am giving the book a generous three stars, because I still think his theory has validity.

UPDATE: The more academic coverage is found in A General Theory of Bureaucracy from 1976. I wish we would have some more recent evidence plus independent corroboration.

The key to organizational success
By James H. Dobbins
This is Elliott Jaques' description on how an organization should be structured so that the people are properly matched to their assignments, and are happy and productive doing their work. I am a huge fan of Elliott's work and I highly recommend this for any management team truly interested in making their organization the best it can be.

Dear Enemy, by Jack Cavanaugh

Nurse Annie Rawlings has seen the atrocities of war and believes, as do most Americans, in the inhumane depravity of the enemy--the Germans. But when a rogue rescue mission ends in tragedy, Annie finds herself behind enemy lines, captured and alone with a wounded German soldier. Through shared danger, faith, and a love of music, the two forge a bond that will be tested by prejudice and the separations of time and continents. When Karl is sent to a prisoner-of-war camp, their fragile relationship seems at an end. Annie searches for Karl, but friends--and a new suitor--urge her to get on with her life. Will she ever see her Dear Enemy again?

Unique tale of darkness and light
By Christian Book Previews
Nurse Annie Mitchell and her new husband Keith are called away from their honeymoon as a precautionary measure, little dreaming that they will be caught up in WWII's bloody Battle of the Bulge. An impulsive mission to rescue Keith goes awry, leaving Annie's friend Mouse dead. Before Keith and Annie can make it back to the American lines, he is killed and she is captured. Annie's only thought is escape from the wounded German soldier who shot her husband, but the enemy's behavior begins to threaten her preconceived notions. Could a murdering Nazi actually have compassion?

A gripping story beautifully told. Building on the success of his previous WWII novels, Cavanaugh crafts a unique tale of the darkness and light struggling in Europe during that time. He delves deeply into the lives of his two primary characters, bringing their emotions and motivations to the surface, especially Annie's complex struggle. The skillful plot matches the characters and never seems contrived, though the ending leaves readers wanting another chapter or two. This is an excellent read. -- Katie Hart, Christian Book Previews.com

Nurse Annie Mitchell saw firsthand the atrocities of war and concluded that the German soldier was inhuman & thoroughly depraved
By Midwest Book Review
Nurse Annie Mitchell saw firsthand the atrocities of war and concluded that the German soldier was inhuman and thoroughly depraved. But when a rogue rescue mission ended in tragedy, a bereft Annie finds herself a captured prisoner behind enemy lines in Belgium's Ardennes Forest. Her captor Karl Hausmann doesn't fit her stereotype of the brutal German soldier. In the days following her capture, Annie must reconsider everything she thought she knew about her enemy. Dear Enemy is as entertaining as it is thoughtful and thought-provoking reading. Jack Cavanaugh has once again demonstrated his mastery of engaged and engaging storytelling. Other also highly recommended works by Cavanaugh and published by Bethany House include: Whiles Mortals Sleep (0764223070); His Watchful Eye (0764223089); and Above All Earthly Powers (0764223097).

terrific historical fiction
By A Customer
During World War II, American nurse Annie Rawlings married Keith Mitchell only to have their honeymoon canceled due to a mission need. Annie has worked with the dying and maimed and believes the Nazis and for that matter all Germans are evil deserving only death for the atrocities they have fostered on people.

A rescue mission behind enemy lines in Belgium fails leaving Annie held prisoner by a wounded German soldier Karl who killed her beloved Keith. As he keeps her safe she helps heal him and they forge camaraderie through a love of music and faith that God will save humanity. As they become more than friends, Karl is captured and becomes a POW. This should be the end of a war torn yet warm relationship, but Annie needs to at least know her Karl is safe so after the war ends she begins her search.

This is a terrific historical fiction novel that grips the audience with an opening paradox that sets the tone of a tale that uses irony and contradiction to tell a powerful human tale. The story line occurs during World War II in which the heroine loathes all Germans until she is forced into close quarters with the soldier who killed her spouse. Annie soon realizes he is a young caring nice man caught in the maelstrom of brutal misunderstandings by old men who send others to fight and die (history repeats itself). With a character driven anti-war message DEAR ENEMY peels away the armor to reach the souls of two foes leaving the inside for the audience to realize that we are human so let's give peace a chance.

This is a very comprehensive survey of conflict resolution theory. The bulk of the work focuses on conflict escalation and stalemate, leaving a noticeably smaller section on settlement at the very end. The information is readily applicable to analysis of community and international disputes. Thorough citation and summaries offer a rich resource for further reading.
I read this for an introductory, graduate-level class on Conflict Resolution Theory. I think this book would also be useful for students of international relations, industrial psychology, political science, sociology, and business management. John Paul Lederach's excellent book, Building Peace, would be useful to those wanting to know more about post-conflict settlement.

No need to argue...
By FrKurt Messick
The book `Social Conflict: Escalation, Stalemate, and Settlement', by Dean G. Pruitt and Sun Hee Kim, is a text I used in a graduate course on conflict resolution. At the beginning of the text, the authors state, `Implicit in our definition of conflict is the deliberate exclusion of differences of opinion concerning facts and arguments over interpretation of objective reality.'

They state prior to the quote at hand that they define conflict as the `_perceived divergence of interest_, a belief that the parties' current aspirations are incompatible.' (emphasis theirs) The problem here is that this probably will involve differences of interpretation, and this is because they use the idea of perceived rather than true divergence of interest (which they explain in the footnote on page 8 sets them apart from many other social scientists in this field). Perhaps what is really meant here is that they mean to exclude mere differences of opinion, upon which there is nothing at stake. One might think here of theological discussions about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin (the quintessential non-important question of medieval theology which was in fact never really asked and debated). Or perhaps one might think here of conflicting views of what might have been the case had the elder President Bush not won the 1988 election, or had he won the 1992 election - perhaps of interest to some, but being hypothetical and having no real goods at stake in the outcome (since we don't have time machines to go back to change things) there's perhaps little applicability to discussing such moot issues.

When I was studying the Supreme Court, one professor of mine made quite the point about how they do not decide moot points. Each case is presented and decided upon on its own merits. For the entire Constitutional Law class, the key point that the professor tried to make, in every lecture and assignment, was to stick to the case and the particular precedents and not go off on political or philosophical flights of fancy.

We live in a world of nuance, in politics, in personal relationships, and in our conflicts. As George Will once stated, `The truth is that, as a carpenter once said to William James, "There is very little difference between one man and another; but what little there is, is very important".' Sometimes from the outside looking in, it is hard to see what the issue is. Irving Janis, in his book `Groupthink', describes several scenarios where sometimes just the slightest change could have had the most dramatic consequences for change - matters of interpretation in the Bay of Pigs, the run-up to Pearl Harbor, or the escalations into North Korea and Vietnam showed where opinion did matter - not always the opinion between the classic confrontation actors, but rather within the decision-making groups on each side.

Pruitt and Kim set out ideas that fit conflicts from fathers and sons over who gets the car keys to international actors on a global conflict scale. Their definition of what conflict is sets up the theoretical framework, for which they trace the history of conflict resolution as a field before jumping in to discuss their particular models.

In chapter three, Pruitt and Kim describe the Dual Concern model as one where there are two types of concerns, about one's own outcome and about the other's outcomes. These can range from indifference to high concern (Pruitt and Kim concede in a footnote that in fact there may be conflicts where there is a negative outcome expectation as well; total war with an unconditional surrender goal might qualify on that score). The dual concern model presents four primary choices in graphical representation, including contending and avoiding as strategies when concern for the other's outcomes are low, and yielding or problem-solving when it is high. Problem-solving is presented as the choice when there is high concern for both outcomes. Pruitt and Kim contend that this does not necessarily relate to motivations -one can be selfish and cooperative at the same time (perhaps the old expression, `Go along to get along' could fit this idea). One of the applications for this in international conflict could be the recognition that the leaders of most nations and groups in conflict are in one way or another representative of and accountable to the people upon whose behalf they contend. Hence, withdrawing and yielding are rare, unless there is indifference about the outcome. Pruitt and Kim cite Druckman's study that `negotiators who are representatives tend to be more reluctant to yield than are individuals negotiating on their own behalf'.

Pruitt and Kim also discuss tactics toward conflict de-escalation and resolution that can be contentious, rather than helpful toward a solution. However, the authors hold up nonviolent resistance as a set of tactics that are sometimes coercive (boycotts, strikes, etc., but this is not necessarily a bad thing) but not necessarily more effective than some other more coercive forms of conflict. The authors also explore the Structural Change model, what happens when third parties intervene, and escalation/de-escalation issues. A useful text for those going into diplomacy, job situations, and family settings - there's something here that can relate to conflict that arises in almost anyone's life.

Absolutely Delightful
By southseattleite
I loved this when it was a Tumblr called "Fill the Silence." And now it's a fun book for your coffee table to help break the ice at dinner parties. Or for intellectually stimulating bathroom reading. The possibilities are endless!

The only thing that would make this book better are footnotes with citations for said trivia. But maybe that's just me.

Kristal's Changed Life by JG-Leathers

My name is Kristal Strang and I am now a rubber animal.

JG Leathers brings us another wild tale that only he can tell. Kristal’s Changed Life, inspired by Celine’s Seduction to Rubber, is the story of Kristal Strang and her unwilling rubber transformation.

Kristal, your average nineteen year old, had lost her mother at an early age. Wild, rebellious and flaunting a great body, she has to try everything at least once; drugs, alcohol, and tons of sex. Thinking she is fooling her strict and dominant father, she goes so far as to have an affair with an older woman whom she looks to for motherly advice.

Unfortunately for Kristal, her father knows all after having her spied on by private investigators. After months of conversations, renovations and planning, he informs Kristal they are moving out to the country. She is devastated by the news, but is definitely not prepared for what comes next.

When arriving at the new estate, Kristal is introduced to Frau Baxter, her new governess. At dinner, it is explained to her that though she is nineteen, she is to be fiercely disciplined by the domineering woman. Kristal finds herself very drowsy after dinner and lets Frau Baxter lead her to her rooms for sleep. Groggily the next morning, she wakes to find she has been completely bound to her bed by her wrists, neck and ankles. Shrieking and sobbing, Kristal is inconsolable. The worst, however, is when Frau Baxter explains that this is indeed part of her “correction” and she is now completely under her control.

After a harrowing first day, where she is stripped of all hair, force fed a gluey mush substance, is encased in her Initial Training Ensemble and sent to the “Contemplation Chamber”, Kristal is frantic and cannot understand why her father would do this to her. Little does she know that this first part will be the easiest.

With a true gift for description, JG Leathers is able to make you feel as though the reader is the one encased in rubber, bound in cuffs, pierced in multiple places, and desperate to escape.

A little boring
By Kindle Customer
I am a huge fan of jg leathers writing, perverted as it may be. But this book was disappointing, probably because he ran out of fresh ideas, but he pretty much covered everything in his other books. This book focused too much on the same subject mainly her discipline in her bondage outfit over and over. For me his two books, Controlling Christine one and two are his best. Skip this one and read the other two, you won't be disappointed.

It was okay.
By Kristopher
The beginning part was okay, but towards the end it got kind of repetitious and monotonous, and extremely unbelievable. Granted, these stories all require some suspension of belief, but the end of this story was pushing it.
