About the Author

Keith J. Jones leads the computer forensics and electronic evidence discovery practices at Red Cliff Consulting. Formerly Foundstone's director of incident response and computer forensics, his book The Anti-Hacker Tool Kit (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002) is the definitive guide to securing critical applications.

Richard Bejtlich is a former Air Force intelligence officer, and is founder of TaoSecurity, a network security monitoring consultancy. He wrote the Tao of Network Security Monitoring (Addison-Wesley, 2005) and Extrusion Detection (Addison-Wesley, 2006).

Curtis W. Rose, a former counterintelligence special agent, is an executive vice president at Red Cliff Consulting where he leads research and development efforts and special projects, and where he provides support to criminal investigations and civil litigation. He was a contributing author or technical editor for several security books, including The Anti-Hacker Tool Kit, Network Security: The Complete Reference (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002), and Incident Response: Investigating Computer Crime, Second Edition (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002).

Dan Farmer is author of a variety of security programs and papers. He is currently chief technical officer of Elemental Security, a computer security software company. Together he and Wietse Venema, have written many of the world's leading information security and forensics packages, including the SATAN network security scanner and the Coroner's Toolkit.

Wietse Venema has written some of the world's most widely used software, including TCP Wrapper and the Postfix mail system. He is currently a research staff member at IBM Research. Brian Carrier has authored several leading computer forensic tools, including The Sleuth Kit (formerly The @stake Sleuth Kit) and the Autopsy Forensic Browser. He has authored several peer-reviewed conference and journal papers and has created publicly available testing images for forensic tools. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science and digital forensics at Purdue University, he is also a research assistant at the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) there. He formerly served as a research scientist at @stake and as the lead for the @stake Response Team and Digital Forensic Labs. Carrier has taught forensics, incident response, and file systems at SANS, FIRST, the @stake Academy, and SEARCH.

Simply a great set of books covering systems and network forensics

As you can find in their individual reviews, each book received high marks on its own merit. Put together and this set of three books cannot be beat in the area of system and network forensics.

Although not entrenched in the area of forensics, I do feel that I have a strong technical background upon which to build. I found this series of books refocusing me to think more like a forensics investigator. Not only did I have the opportunity to dig deeper into specific technology areas, but it also reinforced the concepts through scenarios.

Not for the faint of heart, this practical set of books expects you to have a decent technical background to make the best use of it. If you are interested in taking your forensics know-how to the next level, this is a great reference set to be added to your library.

Great book, great info

This set of books is very well written and provides a tremendous amount of information to the reader. I would recommend this set of books to anyone who wants to roll up their sleeves and truly get their hands dirty.

I would not recommend these books for the beginner as the material will quickly give one the feeling of "Drinking from a firehose" without a reasonable amount of knowledge going in. The authors do state that while the books are written to be easy to understand they are not for the beginner.

He is still the crusading knight and patron of troubadours, but he is also a capable ruler with a clear eye for political realities. Gillingham did much to revive the image of the Crusader King

Though somewhat dated John Gillingham's treatment of the famous or infamous (depending on your viewpoint) revived image of one of the most famous and sometimes obscure English Kings, Richard I (r. 1189-1199). Gillingham's book engages from the start as it attempts to reconstruct the circumstances around the famous Warrior-King's death. The author realized that the circumstances surrounding Richard's death were and are to a good degree an intricate part of his detractor's criticism of the Lionheart being negligent with concern to his kingdom. Gillingham convinces his readers that Richard was on important business, putting down revolts in his continental possessions. Gillingham made more use of diverse sources than any historian before him. The author pointed out with effect that Richard's obligations reached well beyond England and that by 12th century standards, Richard was an ideal king. However, Gillingham does strain to justify Richard's occasional acts of cruelty such as the massacre at Acre. One also wonders about the extensive energy used to dispell the myth of Richard's homosexuality. Gillingham does expose the lack of evidence concerning this apparently 20th century interpretation. However, what does Richard I's sexual preferences have to do with his abilities or failures? Still, Gillingham does give us a clear and believable portrait, albeit somewhat idealized.

Well researched and an easy read.

I found John Gillingham's book on Richard the Lionheart to be a well researched and an easy read. He takes the time to dig through sources and logically presents his thoughts to the reader. To many authors today seem to rely on Wikipedia for their "research" and judge Richard in the context of the world today.
The killings at Acre were brutal in today's world but not for that period of history. From what I have read and studied Saladin did not feel any particular resentment for what Richard had done. In fact after their many battles this is what he felt toward his enemy "Saladin in turn stated that there was not a more honorable Christian lord than Richard. After the treaty, Saladin and Richard sent each other many gifts as tokens of respect, but never met face to face"
The other reviewer stated that Gillingham spent alot of time dispelling Richard homesexuality I think he needed to spend the time on this subject. There is never a mention of Richard's homesexual lifestyle until 700 plus years after his death? Sadly I think too many authors today try to come up with new angles on well written people and throw homesexuality into their books to create a sensation and sales.

highly readable and detailed biography of a cunning personality of the Middle Ages

This is a highly readable and interesting biography of Richard the Lionheart, King of England and much of modern day France. The book has much to recommend but in this review I will focus on family relationships, international tensions, the grand strategy to regain Jerusalem, and the imprisonment of Richard in Germany followed by his return to his vast kingdoms to consolidate power.

Arranged marriages were a major diplomatic strategy in the 1100’s and Richard was related to half the nobility of Europe. It is the relationship with his father Henry II and his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine that sets the stage for his military and diplomatic successes. Richard knew when to charm and when to overpower. During this period of history, dominance of the local nobility and obtaining the wealth of subjects was a major method of empire building. Richard learns from his father Henry II the importance of keeping scores of local nobles under this thumb as a source of income. However this also means countless rebellions that require constant warfare to continue to suppress ever expanding territory and continually forcing the allegiance of those who have been subdued.

The first section of the biography relates many of these continued military encounters and the antagonisms between Henry II and Louis II of France. Interestingly, these antagonisms continue with Henry’s son Richard and Louis’ son Phillip. Alliances shift with the blink of an eye during this period.

The Third Crusade, of which Richard was the primary leader, is a perfect example that the resources needed to win are often overshadowed by the resources needed to sustain the win. This was certainly the case of Richard’s experience in Syria and the Holy Lands as he tries to regain Jerusalem from the Moslems.

There is much fascinating history in this biography. It is not full of footnotes or references but is meant more for the informed casual reader of history. However, the wealth of information that has survived from that period is amazing. Gillingham argues that Richard was not homosexual as some modern historians surmise and he points out how certain pieces of information may have been misinterpreted and thus would indicate that Richard was homosexual. Sometimes the level of detail bogged down the reading experience but for the most part it is a highly entertaining historic biography of a cunning and bold personality of the Middle Ages.

I love all of the books I have read by Charlie Richards (believe you me that is a ton) but I have never melted over a character like I did Sekani, he was sooooo cute! I need a fruit bat now!

Sekani escapes from captivity during transport and ends up taking refuge in a tree on Borscht's land, and he wonders why the big man smells so good! Is Sekani willing to trust the big man to save him from the people hunting him? What will happen when the man that smells sooo good learns what he truly is?

Borscht is the master of his coven, and when he goes to investigate a disturbance on his property, the last thing he suspects is to find a cute little fruit bat that seems to find him irresistible! When he stops to think he is startled to realize that this little bat may be his beloved!

Join Sekani as he discovers good and not so good foods he has never had growing up in captivity, and when he discovers a bed bounces when you jump on it, it is so cute it hurts! You will enjoy the story of these two men learning each other and fighting to make it work! When they rescue Sekani's friends what will become of them and just how much will Sekani miss them if they go away?

You will get all these questions and more answered in this one friends, and such a dose of cuteness you just might have cuteness overload (though I don't think there is such a thing)! Thanks Charlie for taking a chance on a very cute bat and making it work and then some! I received this product in exchange for my honest review.

Totally awesome read and can't wait for the next one.

Borscht is a vampire and rules a small coven consisting of family members. He likes to keep to himself and hates having to work on spreadsheets. He and his family have top notch security to keep their territory safe because there were many outsiders that considered a small coven was ripe for takeover. When his brother alerts him to a possible security breach, Borscht worries that the intruders might be human hunters. Apparently they were, but they weren't looking for vampires, they were looking for a bat.

Sekani is totally adorable, both in human and in bat form. He'd never known life outside of a cage and had been kept by scientists for years before he managed to escape. From his posse in the trees above, Sekani watched as a huge man (Borscht) takes out the four hunters easily, but then is worried when the man seems to want to take up the hunt himself. For some reason Sekani doesn't have a problem with being found this time.

"Talking softly in a language Sekani didn't understand but sure loved to listen to from this guy's tongue, he watched the man wiggle his fingers a bit in invitation."

This book is so cute. Yes it's a true mate story, and it is horrible what Sekani had to go through because of the scientists. But the little sweetie hadn't even had an orgasm before and that situation was written so well and with such caring.

"Never in his wildest imagination had he thought he'd be explaining sex."

I loved how patient Borscht was with his little Beloved and how he wanted to try and make everything right in his little shifter's world. He has the typical paranormal tendencies in being possessive and protective, which were awesome and I do hope that maybe a few of his brothers find their male mates as well in future books. Maybe Aleksei. Totally awesome read and can't wait for the next one.

This was a very cute surprise, Sekani... the bat is absolutely adorable and well written since he literately knew nothing of the world around him, she did a good job exploring his complete sense of innocents though his vampire lover seemed to take advantage of this at some points his wiliness to learn offered him forgiveness... since someone hat to teach him right?... all in all a great book and one of my favorites now. Thank you for writing another one, and I hope to read some more... perhaps one for his rather 'bloody' brother of torture... that should be interesting to see what his deal is.

Both More and Less than You Might Expect

3.5 STARS if that were possible.

Many, like me, probably will pick this book up after watching the movie Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot with Tina Fey. From that perspective I was both disappointed AND rewarded. If you've read other non-fiction accounts in the many political and military hotspots around the world, then you will most likely enjoy what is recounted here. If on the other hand 99% of what you read is fiction and you generally like to keep it light, I doubt this book will be your thing. I fall firmly into the former category and love books by journalists who are willing to go right to the edge in order to make sure the world doesn't ignore what's important. I believe Kim Barker did her best to be one of these journalists, but sadly wasn't taken as seriously (because of being a woman) both on the ground and back home where journalism of this kind was drying up.

COMPARISONS: The movie is much more linear and the scripting/story arc greatly tightened up. Plus it's funnier. On the other hand this book is so much more interesting and three dimensional than the movie, which in reality takes only about 1/3 of the book as it's source material. It also puts much more emphasis on the romantic and sexual relationships of the author, which in the book hardly happen at all. The movie almost makes these as primary plot movers, and it's obvious that they were all little more than tangential to Ms. Barker in her real life.

Towards the end of the book she basically admits that writing the book was as much a form of PTSD self-therapy as anything else. That doesn't invalidate the writing at all, but it does point out that it's not the sort of book that has a "story" or over-arching theme to follow. It's just like a lot of life and meaning isn't always easy to wring out of it. In that light, the book is definitely uneven at times, and rambles all around. But it is also honest and inciteful, and an important voice against the apathy and dumbing down of US foreign journalism. It's partly an indictment against the lazy and often deadly approach the US takes to its foreign policy, though this judgment is not partisan, nor does it let the countries in question off the hook. It's because she ends up loving Afghanistan that she becomes so disillusioned by it's leaders and competing factions.

I bought this because of the WTF movie, but don't be fooled...

Nothing at all like the movie, there are a few details that were left from the book, but this book actually delves into the entire political situation, in great detail!
It's true that the narrator sounds a bit like a Tina Fey kind of self-deprecating smart woman, so she makes a very dire situation seem a bit more light. I liked that a lot about the book.
I started it, and at first I was wondering where it was going, but after a few chapters I couldn't put it down. Unfortunately I'm not good at writing, so I'll leave it there, I really don't know how else to describe how much I loved this book.

The movie brought me to the book, not the other way around. That being said, the movie is better.
Book is OK. Never really held my interest, and took me about a month to finish it.
Too much emphasis on her lame relationships with other expat journalists in Afghanistan. They all seemed a bit dysfunctional and the whole book a bit too "chick flickish" oriented. Perhaps the book would have been well suited for a movie on Lifetime for women on cable TV. .
I worked in Afghanistan for over fiver years with NGO's and traveled from one end of the country to the other. Can't say I experienced the cocaine and liquor fueled parties the author did. Just the occasional cold beer after a long day of convoying.
The movie title based on the book, "Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot" is from the military phonetic alphabet. As far as I know, it's not something that a journalist working for the Chicago Tribune would have said much.

About the Author
Kristen Monroe is an American political scientist specializing in political psychology and the scientific study of ethics. Her work on altruism and moral choice is presented in three award-winning books: The Heart of Altruism: Perceptions of a Common Humanity (1994), The Hand of Compassion: Portraits of Moral Choice during the Holocaust (2004) and Ethics in an Age of Terror and Genocide: Identity and Moral Choice (2012). Monroe's other work explores issues of gender equality within academia, ethics and stem-cell research, the development of empirical political theory, interdisciplinary work in social science, and how people keep their humanity during war. Monroe is the author or co-editor of fifteen books and nearly 100 journal articles and book chapters. She is a past president of the International Society of Political Psychology, vice president of the American Political Science Association, and book review editor for Political Psychology. Monroe received the 2013 Nevitt Sanford Award for Professional Contributions to Psychology and was a 2012 13 Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. In 2010, the American Political Science Association gave Monroe the Ithiel De Sola Pool Award and Lectureship for outstanding work in political science and the Frank Johnson Goodnow Award for service to the profession. The University of California, Irvine, awarded Monroe the 2010 Paul H. Silverman Award for distinguished work in ethics and the 2008 Faculty Senate Award for distinguished research.

An Enlightening Presentation of War's Impact on Humanity

A Darkling Plain turned out to be one of the most thought provoking books that I have ever read. As a Viet Nam veteran, I was emotionally taken into some of the personal stories that the people in the book talked about as their experiences in their war zones. It also presented me with a number of "A HA" moments of realization that I had felt some of the same things that they described in their stories. Its very impressive that the interviewers could capture the depth of the feelings that these people experienced and also very interesting to me that there was such a linkage between them that could be analyzed and identified in their experiences. Although I have never discussed my own experiences in Viet Nam, I came to understand that both soldiers and civilians can come out of a war zone with the same types of mental trauma and struggle with memories for a very long time, and that you are not alone in your feelings. Although Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was more recently discovered as a real malady resulting from a war experience, I am sure that it has affected war zone survivors from all wars. I believe anyone who has experienced a war zone could gain new understandings about their own experiences and feelings by reading this book.

This book thoroughly covers the basics on body butter, including info on different forms of dermatitis, eczema and other skin problems and how body butter can alleviate them. The real value (and the reason why you bought this book) is in its recipes, which are unique and require ingredients that are, for the most part, definitely attainable for the average person. Can you find some of these online? Maybe, but it's worth buying this book to get the added background and detailed explanations.

What a wonderful book! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I consider myself having pretty bad skin and I’ve been trying pretty much everything out there. However, nothing has really made a lasting impression on me (or my skin).

Having said that, I’m so glad I decided to get this book. First of all, it provided me with a completely different approach to the whole business of many of today’s skin products which are pretty toxic. This book did a fantastic job of describing the extensive benefits that nature itself can offer us.

The book is written in a clear and lucid language, which makes it very easy to digest, without sacrificing the quality of the content.

Also, another thing that I really appreciated was the fact that the recipes contained in the book were very easy and quick to prepare. Moreover, the list of resources at the end was a great inclusion, and I will be sure to check them all out.

A major disappointment after High Fidelity.

High Fidelity had one noxious weed in it: to turn the plot Hornby used the cliche that men have to grow up, and he used the fear of death to effect the change. Lame, but at least the weed was surrounded by a great and diverse forest. It was isolated and harder to see.

About a Boy lets that weed sprout over vast fields. Hornby preaches that weed. If you aint got a woman and arent intending to get some ballast and responsibility, well, pardner, you aint much of a man, yer a boy.

It's that bad, page after page. Oh, and don't forget death.

In High Fidelity I had the sense that our protagonist needed some detail in his life to keep from going under. About a Boy reveals an author who seems to earnestly believe that we all need a relationship and kids to keep us from being miserable failures. It's not only philosophically dubious, it's boring, it's stultifying.

My charitable reading: Hornby worked his ass off on High Fidelity, every sentence, every thought. He then made it big, and everyone wanted every word he had. He couldn't stop writing, and he was surrounded by yes men.

Very entertaining.

I have only become recently familiar with Mr. Hornby through the movie versions of "High Fidelity," and "About a Boy."
Based on all the reviews posted here, I realized that the book was probably a fuller version of the charecters in the Hugh Grant movie.
I won't bother to go into great detail about the book itself, as many others have done that already. Let me suggest that for someone who doesn't often read fiction, I find Hornby a really relevant and contemporary author, who actually is entertaining and has something to say.
In this book we meet two teenagers, Will Freeman a 35 year old man, who lives off the royalities of a song his father wrote, and Marcus, a misfit teenager who is misunderstood at school, and is mothered by a suicidal hippie - Fiona. Will lives the kind of life all teenagers wish they could have, but at Will's actual age realize that his life is empty and devoid of meaning.
Marcus is just clueless and his move to a new school has brought many unhappy things to his life, except for Will.
Basically the story is about how the two 'boys' interact and mutually force each other to grow up. Will becomes a human being, and Marcus becomes a teenager. The story is hilarious, touching and worth reading even if you watch the movie. Further, after reading the book,I was able to appreciate the adaptation of the novel to the screen.
Hornby is very good at putting together chrarecters who are real people - perhaps people we may not want to meet ot actually get to know, but nonetheless, Hornby makes them breath. I could see that all the charecters in the book could actually exist.
In short, the book is very worth reading, even if you have seen the movie (the book does takes some surprising turns apart from the movie version), and these are people worth getting to know.

Having watched the movie around seven months ago, I decided that reading the book upon which About a Boy is based would be a good idea. After all, the movie was good and the books are usually better than the movies, so what could go wrong. Happily, not much.
This novel is about two characters: Will and Marcus. Will is a shallow man who knows he is shallow and enjoys it immensely; thanks to an inheritance, he is financially independent, so he spends his days having fun and avoiding commitments. Marcus, on the other hand, is a twelve-year-old plaugued with a depressed mother and a school where he does not fit in. Will needs more depth in his life, and in ways, Marcus needs more shallowness. It is left to the reader to determine who is the boy in the title.
This is a funny book but it also has real heart. Done incorrectly, Will could come off unpleasant, but Hornby succeeds in making him likeable. Marcus could come off as pathetic, but he is definitely better than that. Since this story is character-driven (what plot there is exists only to further character development), it is essential to have interesting, multi-dimensional characters and this book has plenty of them. Even Will, who strives to be one dimensional, has more to himself than he would like to admit.
For those who have seen the movie, the first two-thirds of the book is very similar to the film; on the other hand, the last portion goes in a different but successful direction. Thus, whether you've seen the movie or not, this is a great read, fun from start to finish.
