Waste of Time: Don't bother with this dog of a book

This book is self-published through CreateSpace, wherein, a separate company owned by Amazon provides the tools to help people self-publish and distribute their books.

I found the contents of this book to be incredibly poor and not in keeping with the glowing recommendations that are offered; the reviews make this book seem great but, as soon as I opened it, I could tell that it was self-published. It feels like it was written by a content farm. A deeper review of the book reviews leads me to believe that the reviewers have been falsified in some way-- I was so disappointed with the quality of the book's contents that I filed a return claim within five minutes of holding it in my hands.

In sum, if you need quality and up-to-date information on container homes, there are better ways to spend $10-- don't waste your time on this book and in the end, make the same mistake that I made.

Impressive read and impressive idea. I never heard of shipping container homes. After reading this book i was so amazed by what creativity can do to us. Shipping Container Homes are very cheap to build. A lot of them are so pretty as well. its also earthquake and hurricane proof. This is truly a book that saves people hundred thousands. Five stars!

An essential guide to consulting soft skills

A very good introductory book to consulting. Having been in strategy consulting myself for 5 years, I feel this book provides a great overview to the necessary soft skills and behavior junior consultants need to develop. As graduates in consulting usually bring very good hard skills, i.e., technical knowledge from uni with them, they underestimate the social dynamics and the soft challenges consulting poses to everyday live. In this respect, the author provides background on how and why typical situations in consulting occur, encourages to reflect from a third person perspective to build and understanding and provides useful initial suggestions in how to deal with them.
Many other consulting books focus on consulting technical skills, e.g., frameworks, project management, sales, but less so on the dynamics of the consulting every day live. As such, this is a useful and highly recommended addition to the bookshelf of every soon-to-be consultant and junior consultants.
The book is an easy read, well written and can be read in a short time frame. I recommend this book highly.

What I like best about this book is that the author gives ...

What I like best about this book is that the author gives the reader a practical step-by-step process to follow for solving math problems. There are many good problem solving books, but most of them focus on specific problems and tactics. This book focuses more on the "process" of how to solve a hard math problem. (Part II of the book gives a number of examples.) A good process is just as important as good strategy and tactics. I noticed in my math classes that most students can solve problems that they have seen before. However, students often feel lost when they are given a math problem that doesn't look like any of the homework problems. I've been experimenting with the author's process, and it does seem to work for many of my students, or at least for the brighter ones. It helps them get past their mental barriers and provides them with a road map to solve unfamiliar math problems. I also enjoyed the author's honesty and sense of humor. He explains how mathematicians solve problems in real practice using methods that really work. I like his idea that "ugly solutions precede beautiful solutions." First you find an ugly solution. Then you "polish the stone" and make it beautiful. It's more of a humanistic view that mathematics is done by real people who are fallible, yet creative. My only criticism is that the problems in Part II of the book are too difficult for the average student. Many students are not well prepared for such problems. Then again, maybe that's the point. The author apparently wants to show how people of average intelligence can solve hard math problems. I've been teaching mathematics for over 20 years, and even I learned a few things from this book.

Excellent reading for teaching about the problem solving process

Full Disclosure -- I may be biased because the author is my friend!

I read one of the initial drafts of this book, and I found it to be very helpful for anyone who wants to learn how to solve complex math problems. In fact, the process could be applied to many other life endeavors.

A "street level look" at WWH? Not really, but not too bad either

Like Civil War: Front Line before it, writer Paul Jenkins returns with World War Hulk: Front Line, which finds reporters Ben Urich and Sally Floyd covering the developments, and getting caught in the middle of, the Hulk's attack on the superheroes of New York City. As far as offering up a "street level look" at the developments of World War Hulk, it doesn't really deliver. However, Jenkins does manage to provide a pretty interesting story that plays more as a side-story to what's going on in Greg Pak's WWH. That being said, there isn't a whole lot else here to really hold your interest either. Ramon Bachs provides some decent artwork too, but the real highlight of this TPB is the World War Hulk: World Breaker prologue one-shot written by legendary Hulk writer Peter David, in which the green goliath reminisces about his past run-in's with Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, and the rest of those he has sworn vengeance upon. All in all, World War Hulk: Front Line isn't a bad WWH tie-in at all, but if you skip it you won't really be missing out on much either.

Don't waste your money!

Let me start by saying I'm a big Hulk fan. But this book I could barely finish. I see what they tried to do here, but this was just NOT INTERESTING! It was very boring. Trust me, you won't miss anything in the WWH series if you don't get this book. It is not a must add to the collection, or a must read by any stretch. Save your money. Buy some of the other titles in this series. I would maybe buy this book if it was $5 or less,(and that includes shipping!)

Its just 2 news reporters covering the Hulk invasion.

The Hulk has landed on the Earth and he's made his demands. Two reporters who write for the Front Line; Ben Urich and Sally Lloyd leap into the action for a front row view of the carnage. These reporters are going to get the scoop on what they dubbed "World War Hulk" even if it kills them. -summary

While most of the World War Hulk crossovers focused on the title character or even those whom seek to help him. WWH - Front Line is a rather unique take on the tale, which was actually done before in the Marvel Civil War. It provides a street level view on the Hulk's attack against the superheroes, by taking the reader through the chaotic streets of New York, and showing that the innocent people are actually the ones who suffer the most. The story is an obvious commentary on the effects of war, and even when the battle is over, the real losers are the ones who had nothing to do with it.

The first story is a one shot tale written by Peter David called World Breaker. Here, the Hulk is put on full display as he kills an alien group whom attempts to invade his ship on the way to Earth. His anger is put in the spotlight, and it shows how much of a danger he can be, not only to his enemies, but also to his friends. He reminisces on previous battles with the four he's after, and he later attempts to control and channel his anger. Another interesting portion of the story is a heated discussion between Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk and Doc Samson. She knows that the Hulk is going to come back for revenge sooner or later, and she wants no part of it.

WWH - Front Line begins with Ben Urich being made a deal on getting the full scoop on stories from a mysterious benefactor, with the intention on bringing down the Daily Bugle ran by J. Jonah Jameson. Together with Sally, they venture through many neighborhoods and see how people are dealing with the disaster. The low class districts have no faith in the government helping them in any way; during or after the conflict. There are even references on the Hurricane Katrina disaster which seems to fit right in, and it feels way too close to reality.

This particular crossover has received a lot of hate, and it's mainly only from certain folks whom were only looking for pure full scale Hulk action, and in their search, they completely ignore what bit of useful content is actually present. There really isn't much action to be found though, aside from a few glanced over conflicts. The artwork has some really good moments with the first story boasting the best character designs. Many of the other stories display some good backgrounds capturing the chaos in the city.

Even though I found some type of enjoyment in WWH - Front Line, I don't recommend it as an essential read. It doesn't add much to the main storyline in regards to the Hulk himself or even his conflict. It's only meant to showcase the misery of the people. This is something that will only be valuable to the true completest.

The best bet

There are many things we must thank Richard Ellmann for. First of all, his poetry anthologies. Second, his biographies on Wilde, Yeats and Joyce. And finally, this short, delightful, easy-reading book. Four conferences about the best Irish writers ever: Wilde, Yeats, Joyce and Beckett. And the four are masterpieces. They do not talk about the "common places" you are suppossed to here while being in a conference, they try to express a fact, a situation, a place that defines the person they are talking about: Wilde in Oxford, Yeats in his "old age", Joyce and his anxiety looking for facts to write about, Beckett and Naught. I think that everyone interested on these authors should read the book.

Well worth buying and reading

Ellmann's book is a short one of 122 pages, counting index, and is taken from his four lectures on Wilde, Yeats, Joyce, and Beckett that he gave at the Library of Congress. The book is light, easy, and enjoyable reading and can be finished in four short sessions or in one afternoon or evening. Each of the four chapters assumes that the reader has some general familiarity with the man's life and work, but doesn't require expert knowledge.

As a consequence of the lectures being delivered with a gap of one year from one to the next, each chapter is independent of the others, until the last on Beckett, where Ellmann makes an effort to relate each author to the rest. The four men are very different in their styles and personal history, and most of their lives were spent in places other than Dublin, but relating them in one book makes some sense, albeit somewhat forced, because of their strong connections to Ireland and because some of them had met each other and been influenced by each other.

Ellmann's insight into the four men and ability to relate them and their work come from years of close study, including knowing some of the participants. Particularly telling are such references as, "Mrs. Yeats told me ...," and the like. He includes delightful references and jokes that limn character, such as Beckett's ironic take on Descartes, "I suffer, therefore I may be."

SE's will find this invaluable

I have only read the first four chapters (book in hand as of tonight...) and skipped around to get an over all impression of this text. All in all, I am impressed. While this is not a sales training manual, it focuses on the role of a Sales Consultant as the book calls the position. This is something that is fresh in the sales guide realm. I have personally attended over 1000 hours of sales training, been a sales trainer and sales manager, I chose to move into the role of Sales Consultant because I like playing with all the toys, being a technical authority, and because I like creating vision around products I believe in. Having had a sales background and a career change about 7 years ago into technical fields, I have a passion for selling and technology. I finally have found a book that seems to accurately describe what I do and help me become more effective in my current career. While I may not use every paradigm in the book, I have not found anything in here that I won't use, unlike many other Sales products on the market today. Read this book, if you are a sales person who relies on a pre-sales person, buy it for him or her, you will be the one reaping the rewards. If you are a manager of Pre-Sales, this might be the best tool you have to train new staff. HR folks might be able to use this to define the roles they are trying to fill. Perhaps you might not use everything, but without doubt, if it applies to what you do, you will come away with much more than you might think.

Role of a presales consultant

A friend recently moved from being a technical engineer to the role of sales consultant, and I recommended this book to him, and decided to put in a review to recommend it to others as well. I read this book a while ago and found it to be exactly what it claims to be. It explains the stages of a typical technical sales process, whether it be some trendy enterprise software, databases, or any other technical product. In the process it clearly identifies the different responsibilities between the roles of sales person, and technical sales consultant, which can be a bit confusing sometimes for someone new in the role. Also it goes into typical pit-falls and tricky situations and explains how to handle them. Some parts, e.g. utilities mentioned, are a little out dated, but the principles are still the same today, and I recommend it to anyone who is new to technical presales.

Grade 10 Up-John Howard Griffin's groundbreaking and controversial novel about his experiences as a white man who transforms himself with the aid of medication and dye in order to experience firsthand the life of a black man living in the Deep South in the late 1950s is a mesmerizing tale of the ultimate sociological experiment. Ray Childs' narration is both straightforward and deeply satisfying. A skilled reader, he incorporates different dialects to help listeners distinguish among the various characters. His ability to convey a full spectrum of emotions, including exhilaration, bone deep sadness, and gut wrenching fear is riveting. Equally fascinating is Childs' description of how Griffin's unheard of approach to studying racial discrimination changed his personal life and ignited a storm of argument and discussion around the nation. This recording deserves a place in every public library collection.

An unforgettable look at the worst of the Deep South

As I write this review I have my old copy of Black Like Me in front of me. It's a Panther paperback, printed in 1964, bought by my parents, and found by my sister and myself on their shelves a few years later. I can still remember the shock when I read this, at the age of perhaps eleven, at realizing just how inhuman people could be because of something as seemingly trivial as skin colour.
Griffin spent a little over a month--parts of November and December, 1959--with his skin artificially darkened by medication. In that time he traveled through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, finding out at first hand what it is like to be treated as a second-class citizen--or, as he says, as a tenth-class citizen. Everyone now know the story of the big injustices, the lynchings, the civil rights cases, and for most people those are now just another page in the history text book. Griffin's experiences take the daily evils of racism and thrust them in your face, just as they were thrust in his--the rudeness of the clerk when he tried to pay for a train ticket with a big bill; the difficulty he had in finding someone who would cash a traveler's check for a Negro; the bus-driver who wouldn't let any blacks off the bus to use the restrooms; the white man who followed him at night and threatened to mug him.
I've heard people worry that this is the white experience of racism: that whites can read this book and feel good because a white person felt the pain too. I'm white, so I don't know that I can judge that argument completely impartially, but I can tell you that this book profoundly shaped my views on racism, and that any book that can do what this book did for me is a book that is good to have around.
One more thing. I've said a lot about how powerful, and how influential the book is. I should add that it is also a gripping story. Though Griffin only spends a month with dark skin, by the time you finish the book it feels like an eternity.
A wonderful read, and a truly amazing story.

One of the Most Important Landmark Works in History

John Howard Griffin offered one of the most important contributions to the Civil Rights movement when his work Black Like Me was published in 1960. Griffin approached his study on race relations in the South by asking a very poignant question: "If a white man became a Negro in the Deep South, what adjustments would he have to make?." To answer this question, Griffin shaved his head and had his skin temporarily darkened by medical treatments and stain in order to travel through parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia as a black man.

Griffin had a deep understanding of discrimination even before he began this ambitious project. As a medic in the French Resistance Army, Griffin helped evacuate Austrian Jews away from the advancing Nazis. During the Second World War, Griffin lost his sight and was forced to live with this disability for over ten years. By 1959, Griffin was a published author and a specialist on race relations. Despite such credentials Griffin "really knew nothing of the Negro's real problem." Only by becoming black did Griffin understand what it was like to live as a second class citizen in "the land of the free."
As a black man, Griffin described the variations and similarities of race relations in different areas of the South. Although some states were more "enlightened" than others, blatant acts of racism were found almost everywhere Griffin went.
In Alabama, where Martin Luther King first introduced passive resistance, Griffin endured the hate stares from whites and observed that even graduates from Tuskegee Institute would not be allowed to climb the social ladder in the South because, "whites cannot lose to a traditionally servant class." Finally, while traveling to the otherwise enlightened city of Atlanta, the simple act of a bus driver saying "Watch your step" as his passengers filed out was only reserved for whites.

Even more interesting than these experiences was the way in which Griffin was allowed to converse with blacks and whites on racial matters. Understandably, blacks were highly suspicious of whites and were often inclined to play "the stereo-typed role of the 'good Negro'" when around whites to survive in white southern society. As a "black" man, Griffin enjoyed a rare glimpse of how blacks really regarded segregation beyond the white propaganda. He also discovered the ways in which blacks assisted and supported each other against the perils of racism. In other cases, Griffin observed blacks who were ashamed of their race and who would denounce other blacks for their darker skin or shabby clothes. As a "black" man, Griffin also saw a side of whites that would otherwise be hidden if he had met them as a fellow white man. His experiences with whites while hitchhiking through Mississippi are particularly intriguing.
Despite his experiences, Griffin was surprisingly fair in his analysis. While the reader may despise the hate-filled whites in his story, Griffin did not stoop to the racist's level by denying them their humanity. Instead, Griffin made it a point to see the whites in other roles-as a parent, grandparent, church leader, and loyal neighbor. He also realized that whites who may have been sympathetic towards their African American neighbors, were pressured by southern society to continue segregation. In his epilogue, Griffin was even critical of fellow white freedom fighters who often failed to consult with black community leaders on the race issue.

Griffin's work was a landmark for his time, but weaknesses in his study were present. Griffin visited the larger cities of the South; however, a comparison of race relations between the major cities and the countryside may have created a more complete study as would a visit to other states in the South. A better explanation was needed regarding Griffin's practice of alternating his role as a black man and a white man by scrubbing the stain off his skin. At first, the reader may assume that the author could no longer handle the discrimination and longed to enter the South as a first class citizen again. Later, Griffin maintained that he was studying how the reactions of blacks and whites reversed themselves as he changed his skin color. Both reasons are valid; however, if a need to be white again was the primary explanation than an important point was made: An educated and worldly white man could barely survive in six weeks what a black person must endure every moment of his life.

BLACK LIKE ME by John Howard Griffin

Originally published in 1961, Black Like Me is the account of how white journalist John Howard Griffin had his skin medically darkened and traveled through the Deep South as a black man in an attempt to explain the hardships black people in the South faced. It also covers the backlash against the publication of his story.

Black Like Me is a concise, fast and engaging read. The reader is often able to see things through Griffin's eyes, even as Griffin tries to see things through the eyes of others. He does an excellent job communicating the cultures of fear and despair he encountered. The entire account of his travels as a black man is riveting.

If there is any nit-picking to be done, let it be for this: at times, particularly early on, Griffin's descriptions of mundane, everyday objects and details seem forced and do not aid the narrative.

While today's racial tensions are much less overt (and much less publicized), Black Like Me still has quite a bit to say about the universal elements of human nature and the culture of racism.
