Eloquent, attractive, and insightful

Stephen Houston is a well-respected scholar and the author of a dozen key books on Maya archaeology, epigraphy and art — e.g., Classic Maya Place Names (1994), Function and Meaning in Classic Maya Architecture (1998), Royal Courts of the Classic Maya (2001), The First Writing (2008), The Classic Maya (2009), Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea (2010) and The Shape of Script (2012), to name only several of the most salient. All of them are well worth reading for anyone interested in how we know what we know about Classic Maya art and writing.

But for my money, this well written and beautifully illustrated book tops them all, for it presents the researches of a true pioneer in the study of Classic Maya materiality. Twenty-five years ago, Stephen Houston (along with co-authors Karl Taube and David Stuart) began the study of the folk classification of Maya pottery (and related objects that the Maya labeled with their emic designations, and referenced and framed in ways deeply revelatory of their significance). These authors demonstrated that the Maya categorized their material remains in manners at once foreign to Western approaches yet nonetheless accessible to us in the form of ancient writing, in the symbolism embedded in their iconographies, and in the material remains and patterns inherent in architecture, ceramics, site settlement and more besides. Houston's approach has both matured and deepened over the years, and this tour-de-force revisits the topic of Maya materiality with the perspective of a scholar who has both contributed to and benefited from the ongoing decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing and art. It should be on the bookshelf of every serious student and interested amateur.

A unique book on a unique civilization.

Over the past century and a half many hundreds of books have been written about the ancient Maya, but there has never been anything like this one, a masterful and brilliant study of the relation between the material world of the Maya and their own mental constructs. Only someone with Houston's hieroglyphic expertise and artistic sensibility could have written such a study. Eloquently written and beautifully illustrated, I recommend it to everyone interested in the intriguing and sophisticated civilization of the Maya.

Good supplement to Salesforce documentation

I've read a good deal of the book and it covers some key programming concepts that are spread out through blogs, the developerforce wiki, and the docs. For instance, the static variables stuff is covered in multiple places on the web. A lot of the stuff about Limits is also covered on the web, but, again, you have do a number of searches to get the information conglomerated in a single, digestable piece.

So, the book is a very good collection of information that is sometimes new info and sometimes exists in other places. I think for that reason it is highly valuable. It's a real timesaver, and I recommend it for that reason.

I would give it 5 stars if the print version had an index. The book has a TOC but no index.

I looked for this book at brick and mortar stores (sorry Amazon), but it is a print-to-order to book. So, if you order it from B&N, they have to first print it, and then they have to ship it. So, you might as well just get it from Amazon. I'm telling you this so that you know that you probably won't be able to get it any faster than Amazon can get it to you.

I was privileged to review a pre-publication version of Dan's book. As a developer who has worked on the force.com platform since before it was launched, I found the book enlightening. The author clearly explains advanced Apex topics, that while mentioned in the free documentation and in paid courses, are never really EXPLAINED. I enjoyed just opening the book at random parts and reading, and learning. Highly recommended for anyone working in Apex.

Great ideas but poorly written - especially the code examples

Dan Appleman is a knowledgeable expert and a charismatic speaker. His book is full of nuggets of wisdom that you probably get nearly nowhere else in the Salesforce.com space...BUT there is one thing I really hate about this book.

It is hard to read. Not because it's "Advanced" like Mr.Appleman warns in his foreword. But because it contains the most inconsistent and hard to read code formatting I have ever seen in an IT book in my career. It really feels careless how the author mixes Upper and lower cases, how he ignores C or Java conventions, how he randomly uses and misuses CamelCase, how he uses goofy names for classes and methods, how he omits braces in the weirdest statements...

Stuff that's hard to read and hard to understand doesn't help. If the intention of this book was to help, he should publish a 2nd edition with reviewed code examples.

Very good content, Very good customer service.

I'm not native American, but I'm Korean.
So, I'm not familiar with many BASIC words for native English user.
(People whose mother language is not English may agree with this.)
There are book for ESSENTIAL 300 (or 500) GRE vocabularies, but it doesn't work for people not American.
Those people need to review whole words including BASIC words for GRE, not just a few ESSENTIAL words.
That's why this book is super awesome.
I've purchased several books and looked through them but no book has such many words like this book does.
As long as it doesn't include infinitely many words like dictionary, the more the book has words, the better it is.

I also need to mention customer service.
I'm using Kindle edition.
Kindle users may experience that content varies as you move through pages.
(Since Kindle use 'location' concept instead of robust 'page' concept to fit diverse devices.
So, you can possibly miss some vocabularies.
So, I asked them to number each words, (i.e., 365 accident, 366, acquire) and they immediately update numbering version.
I've never seen this good customer service.

If you're native or already so good with many vocabularies like TOEFL words, well, go with your own choice.
If you need to review or want to study as many words as possible,

Ive been a little rusty since undergrad years.. Found this book helpful in getting me up to snuff with those words you may have left on the back burner because you don't use them everyday... I think it would be helpful for SAT Prep too, certainly would increase a high school students scores who was looking to increase their scores and maximize opportunities for continuing education in general undergrad or graduate.

A great way to start studying for the GRE

I started my GRE prep with verbal, and I went over vocabulary before delving into prep questions. This book is an excellent resource for vocabulary found on the GRE. It's far more extensive than any other GRE vocabulary books or "boxes". Once I started working on practice questions, I found this list far more helpful than the other resources.
