Great practice book!!

I'm just getting back into playing the clarinet after not touching one for the last 46 years. I got several different books to get me back up to speed. The Hal Leonard series is flashy and very approachable, but it lacks depth and I got through it in three lessons. This book doesn't have the personality of that one, but it has a LOT more substance!! It is packed with practice exercises. I think I made more progress using it today than I have with the Leonard book in the last three weeks. It has a dated appearance (copyright 1933!), and it doesn't have any neat gimmicks like DVDs or CDs, but for a serious student who doesn't need that kind of stuff, this is solid and worth a close look.

Very good for developing technique

As a student and teacher, I've always liked the Rubank books. However, many students I've had can find them dry because they focus mostly on technique and don't always include many recognizable tunes. This is very true of this particular beginners book, so I would not use it as the ONLY book a for a beginner. However, it is very good at what it is designed to do, so I would use this book to develop technique in combination with a book like A New Tune a Day, which focuses more on playing recognizable tunes. For a student who really enjoys the clarinet and wants to excel, Rubank offers a focus on developing technique that is missing from most of the band method and other beginners books.

good selection of exercises for beginner.

haven't bought one of these in 30-odd years. Still has the sturdy, heavy-duty cover build to resist being dragged around by a younger student.
I bought this to help my son with learning to both read and play. It's straightforward. Good selection of exercises for the beginning music student.
I can't find the advanced student version I have for the flute, so I'm guessing at the comparison - but this is "beginner" in the sense of someone still learning to read music and fingerings.
